2016 Rowing NSW Championships

This year saw a very strong field in many events with countless interstate crews coming to the event in preparation for Nationals that will be held at the regatta centre later next month.
Friday saw the under 19 singles and the under 21 lightweight single of Erik take to the water. In the under 19 women’s single, Raquel was able to claim a third in her heat to progress to the semi-final, in which she subsequently placed eighth and recorded a personal best time. Erik was also able to progress to the final in his under 21 lightweight single event and went on to claim fourth in the final on the Saturday. Later that day, he teamed up with Chris in the under 21 lightweight double, in which they held off a late surge from Central tablelands to claim the silver medal.
Kate reclaimed her title in the women’s Parra single in dominant fashion and then the next day partnered up with Kevin from UTS to claim a win in the Parra double.
Sunday’s racing saw the under 19 events first up for Nepean. Joel and Henry progressed to the final after coming third in the heat and this was followed up by a seventh in the under 19 double final. Raquel raced with Lauren from Leichardt and they had an impressive heat to progress to the final. Going out hard in the final, they held with the leaders, however they were unable to hold on in the later stages. None the less they went away with a very well  deserved fifth placing that will see them go to Nationals to try and improve on this performance.
The under 16 women’s single event saw Victoria take to the water. Nerves were present, but she got into her groove early and had a comfortable heat which then was followed up by a well-executed semi-final. The final saw some very quick times produced and Victoria had to settle for eighth which is a great achievement in the single. Angus was the next up and raced in the under 17 single. A comfortable heat and semi’s saw him race a well-paced race that allowed him to go to the final in good condition. The final was another case of rowers going off hard and this left Angus to fight from the back. He pushed hard, but he was unable to reclaim the leads that resulted from the first half of the race and he went away with a fourth pacing. This performance will see Angus go to Nationals in the single.
The heat was a factor that all athletes had to contest with and Nepean rowers should be congratulated on the whole, for being sun smart during the regatta. Again, a big thankyou to all individuals who made the weekend possible and a big congratulations to all rowers who competed over the three days.
