After a fun day of racing the day prior it was all business on Sunday as we ready ourselves for the NSW Sprint Championships. A selected squad of ten rowers competed for Nepean and they all performed extremely well. The women’s racing began with Victoria taking to the water for the under 16 single. After a comfortable heat she was made to work hard in the semi’s to qualify to the final that saw her gain a well-deserved sixth place. Next up was Raquel in the under 17 single. After a mishap with officials starting the heat early, Raquel was able to progress directly to the final and gained the silver behind a strong Sydney sculler. Tallara raced in a straight final in the under 21 single and she lead the race from early on and held out a Sydney sculler to take the gold. Kate again had a successful regatta in claiming the gold in the parra single even after a mistake during the race which given the short distance of racing is very hard to come back from and is a credit to her. She then went on to row with Erik in the double and after Balmain was scratched they went on to row through for the gold. Pl where he placed fourth in front of fellow rower Henry who came in sixth. The under 17 racing for the men saw Joel claim fourth in the final with Chris shortly behind in sixth after hitting the buoys mid race. Joel paired up with Angus in the under 17 double and after a comfortable heat they were pipped at the line to claim fourth just a quarter of a second behind Endeavour. Angus raced in the under 16 single and progressed through the heat along with Pat however Pat was unable to progress to the final. Angus paid for the effort it required to progress through the semi’s and went away with a seventh in the final.
As I have stated before, I would just like to remind rowers that mistakes are made and the manner in which these issues are dealt with are a reflection of you as an individual. Rowers are also reminded that it is their own responsibility to ensure they are at the course on time, ensure their single is rigged, they have a bow number and that they have enough time for an adequate warm-up.
