The Reindeer regatta gives the opportunity for all clubs to embrace the spirit of Christmas. Again this year Nepean put in a good effort for the day. A special mention goes to Sam who had the best decorated boat for Nepean on the day. The first race of the day for Nepean was the men’s D grade four with Chris, Henry, Airtarn, Matt and coxed by Elizabeth. After a clean start the boys were holding with UNSW and Canberra in the top pack. As they neared the 250 mark the UNSW crew made a mistake and the Nepean rowers capitalised on it. They went on to take the lead which they were able to hold to take out first place by just over a second. The men’s under 16 single event was up next and saw four Nepean rowers take to the water. Pat took out third and Angus first in their respective divisions. Pat and Angus teamed up in the under 16 double later on in the day and took out second place against a strong Hunter Valley Grammar crew. Angus also rowed an under 17 double with Joel in which they took out a convincing first place. The two teamed up with Chris and Henry to take out the men’s C grade quad which saw the boys come out at a steady pace and hold their composure over the whole course. The mixed quad is always a favourite event for rowers and this was no exception with Chris, Joel, Tallara and Victoria taking the opportunity with both hands. They had a good start and despite a mishap at the half way mark they were able to recover well to get into a strong rhythm to take out a boat length win over Glebe. Tallara and Victoria went on along with Raquel and Bianca to take out a good win in the women’s C grade quad. Earlier that day Raquel raced a smart race to push through some fast starting crews to take out third place in the under 17 single. Other strong single performances included Joel taking out a third in the under 17 single and Erik also went away with a third in the under 19 single. I would just like to say congratulations to all rowers for their effort on the day. A big thankyou to all the coaches and support members who made the day possible for all rowers and to the rowers who put in the effort to help load and unload boats. Many crews had to race as is the case at most regattas in combinations they had never rowed in before and it was great to see so many take this opportunity and give it their best effort.
